The Mid-America Regional Council Air Quality Program is sponsoring a coloring contest from July 1 through Aug. 31 asking children age 12 and younger "What does clean air look like?"
The contest is intended to be a fun way to encourage area children to think about air quality to raise awareness about the impact of clean air on personal health.
Entry forms can be picked up and dropped off at eight Kansas City, Mo., Public Library locations: Plaza, Central, Trails West, Sugar Creek, Northeast, Southeast, Ruiz and Waldo. Select summer camps and recreational facilities across the region also are participating.

Support Kansas City, a local nonprofit providing business and administrative support services to other nonprofits, was awarded the Regional Business Excellence Award by the Kansas Department of Commerce.
Support Kansas City was chosen as one of four winners in the region and 26 winners statewide.

Some came for sentimental reasons. Some came out of curiosity. Some came to see history pass. And some just came to buy stuff.
Piece by piece, the contents and fixtures of the historic White Haven Motor Lodge were auctioned off June 1 and 2. While non-nostalgic buyers walked away happy to have filled a practical need, others left feeling they had acquired an article or two of Americana.
Smiles, tears and memories were on the faces and minds of those who witnessed and participated in the bidding at 8039 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park.

The chamber music ensemble Summerfest hosts Grammy-nominated soprano Tony Arnold for Luciano Berio’s "Folk Songs," an arrangement of folk melodies from America, Armenia, France, Sicily, Italy, Sardinia and Azerbaijan at 7 p.m. at the Plaza Library, 4801 Main St. This "informance" will explore several of these folk songs, chosen for their emotional character and connection between ancient music-making and contemporary music. The Sierra Leone United Descendants’ Association, in conjunction with the Kansas City Public Library, is hosting the Bunce Island Exhibit through Aug. 8. A free lecture and reception starts a 6 p.m. Thursday at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St., with professor Joseph A. Opala, exhibit curator. The exhibit explores a British slave castle in Sierra Leone, West Africa, that was the departure point for thousands of captives to the ports of Charleston and Savannah in the 1700s. St. Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City is making it easier for area women to donate human milk.
The city’s first collection point for donated milk from lactating women opened in June at St. Luke’s Hospital on Wornall Road.
The Kansas City Regional Human Milk Bank is recognized as a Developing Milk Bank by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America and will serve as a collection point or "depot" for the Mother’s Milk Bank of Denver until it is a fully functional milk bank in 2011.
