University of Missouri-Kansas City Office of Community and Public Affairs and the Institute for Human Development recently launched Serve2Learn, an online service-learning database available at web2.umkc.edu/servicelearning/default.asp. Students and alumni searching for community service opportunities can register online to be notified of opportunities or internships that match their service interests, preferences and skills. Community partners seeking volunteers or service-learners can post service opportunities online, and faculty can register to be notified of service opportunities to incorporate into their classes. “One of the cornerstones of UMKC’s mission is urban engagement,” said Stancia Jenkins, assistant vice chancellor of Community and Public Affairs. “While a number of faculty, students and staff regularly engage with our city’s community and civic organizations, Serve2Learn will provide a ‘one-stop-shop’ for posting and accessing opportunities for service learning and community service.” Service learning also educates students on job opportunities and allows faculty to glean inspiration by reading about their colleagues’ service learning projects.
