Avila plans Gold Rush festivities |

The Avila Eagles kick off the NAIA football season by facing defending champions the Doane Tigers in the third annual “First Down Classic,” presented by College Fanz Sports Network, at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Platte County R3 High School stadium. Avila University Alumni Association will host a tailgate party before the game, beginning at 11 a.m., with food, games and music. Entrance to the tailgate is $10 with special discounts for alumni and students. Tickets to the game are $10 for adults and $5 for students. On Friday, Aug. 28, Avila will hold AU Gold Rush, a back-to-school event featuring a pep rally with the unveiling of Avila’s new mascot Dom the Eagle, cheer and dance performances, and family activities including music, caricature artists, balloon artist, airbrush tattoos, face painting, inflatable bounce houses and obstacles courses. The event is free and open to the public. The game will be highlighted on ESPN radio with a live 30-minute pregame discussion on College GameDay.
