All-League team athletes named Sixty-three University of Missouri-Kansas City student athletes have been selected to The Summit League Winter/Spring Academic All-League team. To earn the accolade, a student-athlete must have a 3.00 or better grade point average in the semester in which they compete and must use a year of eligibility. Of the 938 athletes that were honored in the Summit League, 119 held 4.0 grade-point averages during the spring semester. UMKC athletes include: Men’s Basketball: Femi Akinpetide, Dustin Dibbe, Spencer Johnson and Trey McKinney-Jones. Women’s Basketball: Kristin Aldridge, Heather Davis, Mariah Davis, Brianna Eldridge, Chazny Morris, LeAndrea Thomas and Heather Wimberly. Men’s golf: Jens Harr, Brett Iliff, Jordan Miller, Will Robson, Michael Schnegelberger, Scott Swainston, and Josh Taylor. Women’s golf: Chelsea Cadwell, Mary Beth Fisher, Madison Maddox and Kelsey Kipp. Men’s tennis: Gustavo Guerin, Nick Hays, Nick Mader, Serge Ristivojevic, Dennis Schwarz and Patrick Smith. Women’s tennis: Jessica Ball, Caitlin Burke, Chelsea Horner, Emily Lindsay and Jillian Yakominich. Men’s track and field: Blake Houston, Jimmy Keown, Charlie Larson, Marcus Lee, Alex Lopez, Samuel Sullivan and Kevin Venerable. Women’s track and field: Aubrey Frederking, Alex Harkins, Kimoya Harriott, Sara Hiller, Lindsey Howard, Madeline Light, Courtney Moore, Rose Ogburubi, Kathryn Tenkku, and Katherine Williams. Softball: Danielle Bennefeld, Nicole Chalstrom, Kaelene Curry, Nicholle Ellis, Amanda Evans, Betsy Hanley, Chelsea Hartwig, Samantha Hurst, Brittany Owens, Lauren Rodrigues, Anna Sokolik, Taya Upkes, Ashley Whiteside.
Hiller wins ESPN honor University of Missouri-Kansas City women’s track and field student-athlete Sara Hiller has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team. This is Hiller’s third year in a row to be recognized by the magazine. Hiller was a Second Team Academic All-America selection in 2008 and a Third Team Academic All-American selection in 2007. The pharmacy major from Springfield, Mo., was named to the CoSIDA District 7 Academic all-America team earlier this month. Hiller ended the 2009 outdoor track and field season with two top-seven finished at the Summit League Championships. Hiller holds UMKC’s second- fastest times for 5K and 6K runs and the fastest time for the indoor 3,000 meter run.
Harmony gains Kemper grant The RC Kemper Charitable Trust has recently awarded a grant to Harmony, a resource and catalyst for improving cultural diversity among businesses. The grant will help provide diversity training and leadership development workshops for area students. “As Kansas City continues to attract a more diverse population, it is becoming more and more important to build and maintain inclusive schools,” Darryck Dean, Harmony president, said. “We are pleased and proud to have the RC Kember Charitable Trust partner with us in addressing both the challenges and opportunities presented by the increasing diversity in our community.”
