MODOT AIMS FOR DIVERSITY
Missouri Department of Transportation has created a new division to enhance efforts to involve minority-owned, women-owned and disadvantaged businesses in state construction projects. The new division – External Civil Rights – oversees the department’s affirmative action, equal opportunity and nondiscrimination programs, which previously were housed within another MoDOT division.
“Creating this new division allows us to place an even greater emphasis on increasing the number of minority, female and economically disadvantaged individuals working on state transportation projects,” Lester Woods Jr., division director, said.
One of the program goals is to build on the work of developing pre-apprentice and on-the-job training programs for socially and economically disadvantaged individuals on two of MoDOT’s largest projects, including the five miles of Interstates 29 and 35 and the construction of a new Missouri River bridge near downtown Kansas City.

MARC URGES RECYCLING OLD TV
Broadcast television stations in the United States stopped broadcasting on analog airwaves and begin broadcasting only in digital on June 12. Most consumers do not need to purchase new television sets but can receive broadcasting signals by purchasing a converter box.
There is a concern now with the potential for disposed TVs creating negative environmental impacts.
“Older televisions contain hazardous substances such as lead and flame retardants,” Matt Riggs, Mid-America Regional Council Solid Waste Management District outreach coordinator, said. “These substances can leach into our waterways and harm people and the environment when disposed of improperly. That’s why we always recommend recycling.”
There are a number of places to recycle old TVs, including: Best Buy stores; Electronic Disposal Technologies, 525 W. Ninth St.; Forerunner Recycling, 8240 E. Bannister Road; and Office Depot locations.
