Poet Craig Santos Perez will give a talk and read from his new collection “Unincorporated Territory” at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.
Perez is a native Chamorro from the Pacific Island of Guahan (Guam). He co-founded Achiote Press and is a doctoral student in Comparative Ethnic Studies at the University of California-Berkeley. His poetry, essays, reviews and translations have appeared in New American Writing, The Colorado Review, Pleiades, The Denver Quarterly, Jacket, Sentence, and Rain Tax.

The 22nd Annual Sounds in Kansas City Golf Classic begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. at Deer Creek Golf Club, 7000 W. 133rd St., Overland Park. The event is open to the public and is a fundraiser for Midwest Ear Institute, a regional, nonprofit cochlear implant center dedicated to enhancing quality of life by restoring hearing. The Polsky Practical Personal Enrichment Series presents “Back to Basics: Rebuilding Your Personal Wealth with Adam Bold” from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Polsky Theatre of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College, 12345 College Blvd., Overland Park. Bold is founder of The Mutual Fund Store, an independent, fee-based, investment advisory and asset management firm with headquarters in Overland Park; founder and CEO of Smart401k, a company that offers advice to individuals and employers for managing assets in employer-sponsored retirement plans; author of “The Bold Truth About Investing: Ten Commandments for Building Personal Wealth”; and host of The Mutual Fund Show, America’s only radio show devoted exclusively to mutual fund investments.

A session on how to make body butter is at 2 p.m. at the Kansas City Public Library Southeast Branch, 6242 Swope Parkway. Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture will present a panel discussion, “Food from the City for the City,” at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St. The event marks the kick off of the 2009 Kansas City Urban Farms and Garden Tour. The panel is composed of experienced growers, community activists and educators who will highlight the ways in which Kansas Citians are growing food to feed themselves and others. A reception featuring local and organic food products will precede the discussion at 6 p.m.

Poets Hilda Raz and Hadara Bar-Nadav will read and discuss their poetry at 7 p.m. at the Kansas City Public Library Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St. Raz, a professor of English and women’s and gender studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has written books including “Trans” and “The Best from Prairie Schooner: Fiction and Poetry.” Bar-Nadav won the Margie book prize in 2007 for her book of poetry “A Glass of Milk to Kiss Goodnight.”

Veterinarian and small animal specialist Charlotte Clifford-Rathert will discuss “Farm Animals in the City” at 2 p.m. at the Irene H. Ruiz Library, 2017 W. Penway St. Rathert will discuss laws governing livestock in the Kansas City area and offer tips for people interested in keeping animals as pets or for eggs, meat or milk. Season Burnett, Kansas City Community Supported Agriculture Coalition director, and Emily Atkins, Kansas City Food Circle Coordination Committee member, host the free event. As part of the Missouri Valley Speaker series, Stephen Katz will tell the story of his Ukrainian-born grandfather Isaac Katz and the rise of the Katz Drug Co. at 2 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St. In 1917, Katz saved his Kansas City tobacco store by hiring a retired pharmacist. Because of a wartime decree, only pharmacies could stay open in the evening. Katz turned this obstacle into an opportunity, eventually launching a chain of Katz Drug Stores.

A Career Teens class will be presented at 4 p.m. at the Westport Library, 118 Westport Road, offering teens a chance to create a professional resume that can be printed, faxed or emailed. Attendees will learn tips on preparing for job interviews and how to navigate Web sites such as www.monster.com or www.careerbuilder.com.

Author and journalist Gary Pomerantz will talk about his new true-crime book, “The Devil’s Tickets: A Night of Bridge, a Fatal Hand, and a New American Age” at 7 p.m. at the Plaza Library, 4801 Main St. The true story set in Kansas City follows the murder trial of Myrtle Bennett, a housewife who kills her spouse over a game of bridge in their Plaza apartment in 1929. Pomerantz, a lecturer in Stanford University’s Department of Communication, credits Sherrie Smith of the library’s Missouri Valley Special Collections for research assistance with his book.

JUNE 25
The Waldo Library, 201 E. 75th St., hosts a Worms Eat Our Trash activity led by Eric Williams and Sarah McCoy at 2 p.m. Attendees will learn about how worms turn trash into healthy soil.
