The third annual Watson Challenge is set for Saturday through Monday, June 13-15, at Shadow Glen Golf Club in Olathe.The event brings to together the top 48 professional and amateur players in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area to see if they can top Tom Watson and earn bragging rights as the No. 1 player in Kansas City for 2009. There will be 47 players joining Watson in this year's Watson Challenge. The field includes several players from the area, including Kansas State golfer and Rockhurst High School graduate Jason Schulte; Oakwood Country Club professionals Todd Stice and Tyler Alt; Blue Hills Country Club pro Todd Loechler; and Loch Lloyd Country Club professional Barrett Martens. Watson won the event in 2008, after Hallbrook Country Club pro Blake Graham captured the first Watson Challenge in 2007. The First Tee of Greater Kansas City is the charitable beneficiary of the Watson Challenge. To date, the event has raised more than $125,000 for the First Tee Scholarship Fund. Spectators are welcome at the event. Daily tickets are available at the Kansas City Golf Office or online at kansascitygolfer.org in return for a $25 donation to the First Tee of Kansas City. Three-day passes are $40. The professional purse is $24,500, with $10,000 going to the champion. The rest is divided between the next nine professional finishers. Amateurs receive prize certificates with five places total. Play begins on all three days at 7:30 a.m. The Kansas City Golf Association is running the tournament.
