The University of Missouri-Kansas City's athletic department on April 30 handed out its annual awards at the Champions Dinner at the Kansas City Marriott Country Club Plaza.A total of 17 athletes earned 10 different awards. This marked the first-ever Champions Dinner for the school. "Our inaugural Champions Dinner was a first-class event that is definitely one we plan on expanding and enhancing in the future," UMKC Athletic Director Tim Hall said. "It is a great way for us to be able to honor student-athletes who have achieved high academic success; as well as our donors and friends of the program." The women's basketball team had four representatives at the Champions Dinner. "We are extremely proud to have four representatives from our women's basketball team receive awards," women's basketball coach Candi Whitaker said. "I think it speaks a lot about the character, work ethic and overall talent that is present in these young women." Here is a look at this year's award winners: • Women's basketball junior Chazny Morris and men's soccer junior Bryan Perez took home the fifth annual Circle of Champions Award. This honor goes to the best overall male and female student-athletes and is based upon the individual's athletic performance. • Women's basketball freshman Mariah Davis and track and field junior Marcus Lee are co-recipients of the David B. Miller Award. This honor goes to a student-athlete who through persistence and determination has proven an inspiration to others.• Women's basketball player Heather Davis won the Dr. Henry A. Mitchell/People-to-People Award. UMKC annually presents this honor to the UMKC basketball player who best exemplifies Dr. Henry Mitchell's qualities of friendship, enthusiasm, sportsmanship and humanitarianism. • Men's basketball freshman Latreze Mushatt and women's basketball freshman LeAndrea Thomas won the Jim and Sally Job Award. This honor goes to a promising student-athlete. • Men's basketball senior Dane Brumagin earned the Lee Hunt Award. UMKC presents this honor to a basketball student-athlete who demonstrates academic ability, moral character and leadership. • Men's golf junior Alex Hogben and women's tennis freshman Jillian Yakominich received the Sam Davidson Award. This award honors a men's and women's student-athlete who best exemplifies the ideals of scholarship, sportsmanship and goodwill. • Men's soccer sophomore Ken Cooper and softball freshman Betsy Hanley earned the Dutton Brookfield Award. This honor goes to a talented student-athlete who demonstrates great potential for the future. • Men's soccer senior Brian Harris and women's golf freshman Kelsey Kipp won the Jack Gant Award. This honor goes to the best overall student-athlete and includes athletic and academic performance.• Men's soccer senior Garret Guthrie and track and field/cross country senior Sara Hiller received the Stan Durwood Award. This honor goes to the male and female student-athlete with the highest grade-point average after passing a minimum of 100 hours.
