RUN MEMORIALIZES WIGGINS
Rockhurst University will honor the late Sen. Harry Wiggins at 10 a.m. Saturday with the Harry Wiggins Memorial Trolley Walk.
Rockhurst alumnus Jim Glynn will speak at a kick off rally at Massman Hall Gallery. The walk is a three-mile course from Rockhurst to the Harry Wiggins Memorial Trolley Tracks and back.
After graduating from Rockhurst in 1953, Wiggins served as a state senator for Kansas City’s 10th district for 28 years.
Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by the rally at 9:45 a.m. and the walk at 10 a.m. The cost is $25 for adults, $15 for students and $5 for children. Participants also will receive a T-shirt, while supplies last. Proceeds benefit the Helen F. Wiggins and Rev. Walter J. Ong, S.J., educational scholarships at Rockhurst.

CITY PASSES LEASH TO VET
Halfway Home Pet Adoptions, Kansas City’s new animal shelter, will celebrate recent shelter changes from 8 a.m. to noon at the facility, 4400 Raytown Road.
Tours will be available, along with reduced-price dog baths, pet caricature drawings, micro chipping, vaccinations, licenses and volunteer sign up.
A ceremonial “passing of the leash” at 10 a.m. will feature 5th District City Councilwoman Cindy Circo and Wayne Steckelberg, founder of the Veterinary Management Corp. Circo lead the effort to create a new partnership at the shelter. Since March 1, it has operated as the city’s animal shelter, caring for animals that have been picked up and serving as an adoption center.
The Neighborhood and Community Services Department’s Animal Health and Public Safety Division employees now provide pick-up service of stray, sick and injured animals. Staff continues to enforce animal and fowl ordinances, and conduct investigations and inspections. The office is at 4900 Swope Parkway.

KC WILL BE PART OF TAX HOLIDAY

Kansas City will participate in the State of Missouri Show Me Green Sales Tax Holiday April 19-25. The holiday exempts state and city sales tax on retail sales of qualifying Energy Star-certified new appliances, up to $1,500 per appliance.
The holiday, made permanent for one week a year by the state, applies to residential and commercial customers purchasing qualifying equipment. Items applicable for this exemption include washers, water heaters, dishwashers, air conditioners, furnaces, refrigerators and freezers.
Energy Star appliances are designed to save energy and money on utility bills for the life of the appliance.
