KC GETS HOMELESS FUNDS
Kansas City’s Neighborhood and Community Services Department received $3.6 million in federal stimulus money to help prevent homelessness.
“The funding awarded to Kansas City is an unprecedented commitment to fund programs that have a proven track record of providing real housing solutions for our most vulnerable neighbors,” Eugene Lipscomb, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Region VII deputy director, said. “These grants offer a critical lifeline to homeless individuals and families. And today, with the foreclosure and unemployment crisis looming, millions of families – both homeowners and renters – are also in danger of losing their homes, so we must focus substantial resources to help those families find stable housing.”
The funds will be used to address the needs of people in imminent risk of losing their houses and to move homeless families and individuals from homelessness into permanent housing, according to the city.
Specifically, the money could be used for rental assistance, and relocation and stabilization services that include searching for a house, repairing credit, paying security deposits and rent. Distribution of the money includes case management for recipients, who must meet requirements established by the government.

CHURCH HEADS TO AFRICA
A team of 14 members from Country Club Christian Church are in South Africa to continue the church’s work with mission partners in the Kei Region of the Eastern Cape Province. This is the church’s third trip to region since 2005.
Senior Minister Glen Miles is leading the team as it undertakes construction and beautification projects to improve facilities at the Thembani Special Day Care Center, which cares for disabled children abandoned or left with grandparents or distant family members while their parents seek employment in larger cities.
The team’s projects are being planned by Jon and Dawn Barnes, missionaries with the Kei Regional Council of the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa, which is affiliated with Disciples of Christ.
